King Salmon

Guests can fish for King Salmon by booking a charter through the Seward Resort at a discounted price, King salmon are caught by trolling, with the boat moving at low speed, drawing lines through the water at different depths, dressed with lures or bait. Our captains have been fishing for Kings for several years in these waters and are dialed in to what entices these finicky feeders.

The limit for these wild ocean King Salmon is one or two per person per day, depending on the area fished.

Another method for king salmon fishing if you prefer not to travel on a boat, is using an 8-10oz treble hook that you pull through the water and “snag” the salmon.  Poles, waders and nets may be rented from the Seward Resort for a nominal price, treble hooks are available for purchase as well.  The front desk agents can point you in the right direction as far as areas to go “snagging”.

Red Salmon (Sockeye)

Are in season in Seward, Alaska from mid-May to the end of July. They are most abundant in June and early July, this fishery is all done from shore using the “snagging” method, using an 8-10oz treble hook that you pull through the water and “snag” the salmon. Poles, waders and nets may be rented from the Seward Resort for a nominal price, treble hooks are available for purchase as well.  The front desk agents can point you in the right direction as far as areas to go “snagging”.

Silver Salmon

Silver salmon (Coho) enter Resurrection Bay in late June and can be fished from a boat through August/September.  Silver Salmon may also be caught using the “snagging” method in August and September, depending on the size of the salmon run.

When fishing for Silver Salmon from a boat, the best method is “Mooching” a technique where each person jigs their hook baited with a small piece of herring. When the fish bites, the hook gets set and the fight is on. You will find this is a more effective technique than troll fishing when the fish are schooled up and allows the angler to feel the bite.

The catch limit for Silver Salmon is six fish per person inside Resurrection Bay and three Silvers each when caught outside the bay.

Halibut

Every spring, the inland waters near Seward explode with an abundance of bait fish, which attracts schools of Alaskan Halibut, ranging in size from 10 pounds to 400 pounds. These Halibut rise from ocean depths of over 1000 feet to as little as 50 feet of water in search of bait as they begin their frenzied feast. Alaska Halibut are some of the finest athletes in the sea. With no body fat and pure muscle, these rod-straining fish can exhaust you by their brute strength as they fight you back to the bottom.
